BEST of 2014: Blues and Southern Rock TOP 20

The first of the five lists that I’m going to be dropping on you over the next week or so. If you’re a fan of my radio show, The Mental Metal Trivia Show, you can catch the show every Thursday, Noon EST (5 pm UK Time) on Firebrand Rock Radio.

The show tomorrow will debut the lists for Country, Americana, & Bluegrass. Also the lists for Blues and Southern Rock will be covered. A total of 41 songs in 3 hours if you want to hear what all the hype is about. I’m simply going to count them down so YOU can discover them and fall in love with them just like I did… Counting them down from 20 down…

20) Kirby Sewell Band – Girl With The New Tattoo

Kirby Sewell Band

Just a fun, spunky blues CD done exactly the way the blues are meant to be done.

19) Crow Black Chicken – Rumble Shake

Crow Black Chicken

An Irish band that combines the best of Rory Gallagher, Cream, and some Cajun influences to create a monster sound.

18) Cody Jasper – Cody Jasper

Cody Jasper

Texas Blues mixed with Southern Rock and laced with tons of attitude. Stevie Ray would approve.

17) Brian Setzer – Rockabilly Riot All Original

Brian Setzer

Does anyone really do it quite like Bryan? Ready, Steady, and enough power to crank a diesel engine!

16) Johnny No – Modern Hymns For The Gentleman Loafer

If Tom Waits decided to become a Memphis Blues singer, I imagine you’d get something close to Johnny No. Just one barn burner of a CD here.

15) Whiskey Myers – Early Morning Shakes

Johnny No

Southern Rock mixed with touched of Americana and Rock that makes for a great experience. I listened to this a ton in the car and got lots of compliments on it from people.

14) The Buffalo Ruckus – The Buffalo Ruckus

The Buffalo Ruckus

Southern rock mixed with a dose of the blues. There’s a definite Blackberry Smoke vibe to this release and that’s a good thing!

13) Darrell Mansfield – I Am Not Alone

Darrell Mansfield

30 years in to his career, Darrell Mansfield is still cranking out Christian inspired Harmonica Blues that tear the joint down. His version of “House Of The Rising Sun/Amazing Grace” is worth the price alone.

12) Trigger Hippy – Trigger Hippy

Trigger Hippy

One of the newer supergroups to hit the Southern Rock/Americana scene this year. They definitely made their mark with a release that hammers home the emotion with amazing lyrics and brilliant vocals.

11) Devon Allman – Ragged & Dirty

Devon Allman

Everything you expect and more from the name Allman. A real burner on every level.

10) Dirty Basement Blues – Coming Clean

One stomper of a CD. The ONLY reason this is not ranked higher is because it just recently came into my possession and I’ve not had more time to live with it. This is another perfect example of why Detroit rocks!

9) The Mojo Makers  – Devil’s Hands

Mojo Makers

Blue eyed soul mixed with blues and hammered home with a heavy dose of amazing vocals. This is a not to be missed CD!

8) The Dirty Guv’nahs – Hearts On Fire

Dirty Guv'nahs

The Guv’nahs are well renowned for delivering rocking, soulful, fun jams. This is no exception.

7) Scott H. Biram – Nothin’ But Blood

Scott H Biram

Loud, abrasive, and in your face. Blues delivered in an unflinching fury!

6) Ryan McGarvey – The Road Chosen

Ryan McGarvey - The Road Chosen

Ryan popped unto my radar a few months ago and quickly became a favorite. Classy, soulful, blues on every level done with an almost Clapton style reverence.

5) Shane Speal’s Snake Oil Band – Holler

Shane Speal

Pure fun on every level. Put this one on, crank it loud, and piss off the neighbors!

4) The Urban Chiefs – Rise Above

Blake Saban and crew return with another raging party delivered via musical format. This one is loud and fast!

3) Paul Thorn – Too Blessed To Be Stressed

Mississippi Blues delivered with Memphis Soul. One of the best lyricists in music as well. Paul has a knack for writing tunes that have a touch of sarcasm yet still hammer home a killer social message.

2) Eric Sardinas & Big Motor – Boomerang

Eric Sardinas

The only way to quite describe what Eric Sardinas and Big Motor do is FURIOUS! This is Murderin’ Blues right here. Big, mean, and nasty on every level. Blues delivered with a heavy metal attitude!

And that brings us to the NUMBER 1 Spot!

1) Dead Man’s Ransom – Dead Man’s Ransom

Dead Man's Ransom

Hands down, the MOST listened to CD I got this year. This has been on constant repeat both in my car and on my radio show. This is Sons Of Anarchy set to music. Absolute RIDING music. Power blues with a rock trio delivery that smokes on every level. THIS is a must have!
